Our products are non-toxic, made from naturally occurring bioluminescence found in the deep ocean, similar to Fireflies, Shrimp, Squid, Glowing Fish, and many other marine animals that make light.

What makes it glow?

The glow effect is caused by the meeting of a protein enzyme and an anti-oxidant. This is the same reaction that many bioluminescent animals use to make their light. We have copied the gene and now synthetically make the  proteins. If you would like to know more, please see our Learn Page.

So…….you’re squirting yourself with those creatures that wash up on shore???? Um …don’t they die??

No, we synthetically make the bioluminescent proteins, so no animals are used in the SplashLight 🙂  Find out more on our Learn Page.

What is in the ReLume?

The exact ingredients are top-secret, but primarily there is Luciferase (the protein enzyme), Luciferin (the anti-oxidant), and salt.

How long does it last?

Once mixed with water in the SplashLight, the ReLumes should be used as soon as possible and may last up to 3-4 hours in the water; the sooner used, the brighter the glow. The glow will be quick and bright, and can last up to 1-2 minutes.

Does it stain?

No, if there is some yellow residue on clothing, wash immediately after. If on furniture, wipe with a damp cloth before dried.

What if I accidentally get it in my eyes?

If there is any discomfort, rinse eyes with clean water. (Inside the SplashLight we put nylon filters to prevent any undissolved ReLume particles or water impurities from getting through.)

Where can I find more about bioluminescence?

First, if you haven’t already, check out our Learn page.  This will be a growing resource filled with information about bioluminescence. Edith Widder is a well known marine biologist who has studied bioluminescence.  She has given many talks about the subject, but her speech for Ted Talks about “Glowing Life in an Underwater World” is one of our favorites.

Where in the world are the best places to experience bioluminescence?

While there are many places in the world to experience bioluminescence, 2 places that we feel are great are
  1. Bioluminescent Bay in Puerto Rico.  In this bay bioluminescent plankton near the surface of the water will glow when the water is stirred.  This is one of the most magical experiences you can have with bioluminescence without a deep sea vessel.
  2. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee.  For 2-3 weeks out of the year fireflies put on a light show at night as they dance to find their mate.  There are many other places you can go to see fireflies but this is considered one of the USA’s biggest firefly spectacles.

How will I know if my order was completed?
