BioToy is an exciting, new, innovative company that aims to launch science
into a new realm of fun. BioToy will redefine the science category
and make it fun again. We will be introducing products that will
allow kids to explore, create and discover the exciting new world of
leading edge Bio-Technology. All BioToys are powered by Prolume's
NanoLight® and NanoFuel®. These substances
are natural and used by many animals in the ocean, such as jellyfish,
squid, and soft corals.
 is the result of a scuba
diving experience that occurred off of Zuma Beach in 1970. Bruce and
Gene went diving, and there happened to be a bloom of microorganisms in
the ocean that night. This dinoflagellate bloom is termed the red
tide because the ocean looks red during the day. At night, the water
is brightly bioluminescent. Each crashing wave creats a splash of
light. As the "BioBoys" entered the water every movement
created light. Moving their arms while swimming activated millions of
microscopic points of light, creating a pattern like an Angel's wings.
Bruce and Gene wanted to share this experience with everyone but didn't
exactly know how.
We always remembered that night.
Alas, the business of life (going to med school) got in the way of our
pleasure! Luckily on our way through medical school, we learned
about cell and molecular biology and how Mother Nature makes her Night
Lights work.
We have now decided to make some
simple toys for kids to have fun with. The first one is the "SplashLight®" squirt gun. It sprays a stream of bioluminescent water, much
like what we enjoyed on our night dive twenty years before.
